Christmas Mystery, Christmas Fantasy

‘Christmas Mystery, Christmas Fantasy’ explores two sides of our Christmas tradition: the mystical message of the Incarnation as expressed in Scripture; and the legends, symbols, and images that have become part of the Christmas celebration through the centuries. Settings of these texts range from late medieval through to the late 20th Century, and include works by Britten, Josquin, Vaughan Williams, Tchaikovsky and Palestrina.

Rachmaninoff’s “Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom”

Written in 1910 as part of a movement by Russian composers to return Russian chant to its roots, The Liturgy of St John Chrisostom sets the most commonly used liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Accepted by neither Soviet Communism nor the Eastern Orthodox Church (its harmonies were deemed too “modern”), it was little sung until its rediscovery in the 1980s. The rich sonority of this a capella work make it a worthy companion piece to Rachmaninoff’s Vespers.

Celebrate Flag Day with the American Masters

Join us as Pro Arte Chorale explores both the serious and the fun side of 20th Century American music. Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning is a setting of Creation texts from Genesis. Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms presents passages from six psalms, sung in Hebrew, that he wrote for a music festival at Chichester Cathedral. Then sit back and enjoy many of your Broadway favorites by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Porter, and Bernstein.
